Abstract

Mindanao in the Philippines is home to the top three fruit export industries—bananas, pineapples, and mangoes—but the smallholder farmers in these industries remain poor. This thesis provides evidence on the prospects of inclusive value chains by identifying strategies to improve the participation of smallholder and women farmers. The tropical fruit industry has a high comparative advantage in the international market and specializing in these crops can promote inclusive value chains. This can be achieved by improving the rural livelihood capital of farmers, promoting cooperative contract farming business model, and providing gainful employment to landless and resource-poor women farmers.
