Profiling industry-required non-technical competencies in university business graduates

Abstract

A broad set of required ‘nonItechnical’ business graduate competencies was identified from employerIbased literature. Profiles summarising the required balance of cognitive, social, selfImanagement and technical/administrative competencies were derived. Three profiles, the ‘Manager’, ‘People Person’ and ‘Business Analyst’, were generated for Australian employers (n=211), Australian academics (n=155) and UK academics (n=135). Minor variations within and across the samples suggest generality in competency requirements. Australian employers and academics broadly agreed on graduate performance in the competencies. Areas of perceived weakness aligned with previous work highlighting critical elements of the ‘managerial skill set’, urging business schools to review their current undergraduate offerings.
