Abstract

This PhD study presents the design and preparation of three proto-types of alginate-based honey-loaded topical formulations, which might provide some clinical advantages over pure honey. The physicochemical properties and some phytochemical characteristics of the formulations, a ‘pre-gel’ solution, a ‘wet sheet’ and a ‘dry sheet’ incorporating four Western Australian honeys (Jarrah, two Manuka, Coastal Peppermint) as well as a New Zealand Manuka honey as a comparator, were recorded and monitored over six months storage at different temperatures. Moreover, the release profile of select honey constituents from the honeys and their corresponding formulations along with antibacterial and antioxidant bioactivities were determined.
