Abstract

The impact of tooth decay can be reduced through the adoption of a range of systematic preventive strategies. However, these measures need to be targeted at the population who need it most. Dental screening of the population permits identification of high-risk people and allows them to receive appropriate dental care. This research aimed to validate a photographic screening method performed by mid-level dental practitioners. Findings revealed that these practitioners and dentists can detect decay from photographs with comparable accuracy and reliability. This research confirms that smartphone-based photographic approach can be used as a cost saving and user-friendly screening tool.
