Abstract

Ion-molecule complexes are of research interest to atmospheric chemistry, chemical reactions, and the nature of ion solvation. Core to the theme of this work is the application of spectroscopic techniques and ab initio calculations to determine the structure of halide anion complexes with the small carbonyl molecules CH2O, CH3CHO, and CH3COCH3 in the gas phase. Anion photoelectron spectroscopy, the main spectroscopic technique of this work, achieves this by way of photodetachment from the anion-molecule complex. The Cl-...CCl4 anion complex serves as an introductory example as to the power of this technique before comparisons are drawn along the carbonyl series.
