Abstract
The book examines the relationship between the discovery and development of oil resources and political instability in Mauritania between 2001 and 2011. It challenges versions of the oil curse thesis that give causal primacy to oil as an agent of instability. Based on documentary, interview and other sources, it shows that historically rooted domestic and international factors are of greater significance than oil alone in explaining Mauritania’s political instability.
