Palaeomagnetic constraints on the geological terrane models of the Scottish Caledonides

Abstract

A compilation of new and published palaeomagnetic data from the Scottish Caledonides allows construction of Apparent Polar Wander Paths (APWPs) for the Grampian Highlands, Midland Valley and Southern Uplands terranes. Geological incompatibilities between terranes are the result of predominantly palaeolongitudinal movements prior to late Silurian times. A common late Silurian-early Devonian ‘corner’ in each APWP suggests the terranes to have docked (to within the errors of the individual determinations) by this time.
