Abstract

Fatigue life assessment is a critical design driver of conductor-wellhead components in subsea drilling systems. Existing methods do not model the soil-structure interaction adequately. This research studied the changes in strength and stiffness of soil-conductor interaction due to load history, and provided approaches for their inclusion in design. This was achieved through comparison of physical modelling tests on soft soils and numerical modelling using several frameworks for fatigue analysis. The impact of the p-y curves selected on the bending moment profile of a conductor and on the fatigue life assessment of the components of the system was discussed.
