Abstract

The thesis set out to test whether there are opportunities in the regulation of Australian offshore petroleum to improve outcomes for future generations. The approach taken was to prepare a methodology for the assessment of a licensing regime's treatment of future generations and then apply it to compare the offshore petroleum licensing regimes of Australia, Norway and the United Kingdom. The comparison showed areas of weakness in the Australian regime which resulted in the thesis's recommendations for improvements to it.
