Abstract

Nothing is Real was presented in Astra’s NOVEMBERFEST II series (Melbourne, November 2024), featuring Thierry de Mey’s Silence Must Be (2002), Alvin Lucier’s Nothing is Real (Strawberry Fields Forever) (1990), and John Luther Adams’s Four Thousand Holes (2010). The programme explored gesture, resonance, and psychoacoustic phenomena through experimental combinations of live performance, electronics, and light.

As pianist, I collaborated with percussionist Alexander Meagher and artist Nathan Ellul to create a multi-sensory event. The staging was novel and reimagined the Carlton Church of All Saints, with three performance zones designated across the aisle. Each work progressing through the space, like a procession, attempting to—visually, physically, and aurally—connect each work together more seamlessly.

The concert demonstrated how spatial design and experimental musical repertoire can expand performance practice.
