Abstract

A frequent challenge in the scientific and commercial use of lasers is the need to determine the frequency stability of the output optical signal. In this article we present a new method to estimate this quantity while avoiding the complexity of the usual technique. The new technique displays the result in terms of the usual time domain measure of frequency stability: the square root Allan variance. (C) 2004 American Institute of Physics.
