Abstract

Ionic liquids (ILs) are pure salts with low melting points and this PhD thesis examines three types of ionic liquids including oil-miscible ILs, surface-active ILs and polymeric ILs. The bulk and interfacial nanostructure of these ILs are probed by small angle X-ray scattering, small angle neutron scattering and atomic force microscopy. The potential-dependent lubricity of these ILs, which refers to the capability of using external electric stimuli to control lubricity, are investigated by atomic force microscopy. The outcome of this work helps to understand the correlations between bulk nanostructures, interfacial nanostructures and lubricating performance of ILs.
