Abstract

The present thesis examines metacognition in relation to retrospective memory (meta-RM) and prospective memory (meta-PM), with a focus on ageing. It comprises a systematic review and meta-analysis reviewing the existing literature on meta-PM, and three experimental studies examining meta-RM and meta-PM in large samples of older adults aged 50 and above. This thesis comprehensively measures meta-PM/meta-RM accuracy, characterises meta-PM/meta-RM in relation to individual differences, explores how meta-PM/meta-RM changes with task experience, and presents a novel method for analyzing metacognitive data. Complex statistical strategies such as latent growth curves and structural equation modelling are used to achieve the thesis aims.
