Abstract
A sapphire cylinder, of 100 mm diameter and 60 mm length, was suspended on a pair of sapphire fibers to simulate a mirror for a cryogenic laser interferometric gravitational wave detector. A mechanical quality factor of 2.5 x 10(8) was obtained for the second axial symmetric mode of the cylinder at 4.2 K. (C) 1999 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
