Martin Griver Unearthed: The life of a Spanish missionary priest who became a bishop in a colonial Western Australia, 1814-1886

Martin Griver was an energetic, Spanish born priest who came to Western Australia as a young missionary and rose to become the 2nd bishop of Perth. A seminarian at age 14, he went onto study medicine at Barcelona University. These studies and the accountancy clerk skills he developed whilst working in support of them, proved useful in far flung Western Australia and eventually, as apostolic administrator in the Perth diocese. Blessed with humility, zeal and inclusiveness, he cared for the underprivileged and was instrumental in blending Catholic life into the more sectarian 19th century Perth. A passion for helping marginalised Aboriginal people, the impoverished and convicts remained with him throughout his life and he brought his own Spanish flavour and flair to the Perth diocese.
