Marcel Duchamp's Fountain in Context: Readymades Read and Made Part 2

Lyn Merrington

Research output: Book/ReportBook

Abstract

Marcel Duchamp's Fountain has been cited as the most important artwork of the Twentieth Century, however the context in which it was created is not often fully taken into consideration in its discussion. This study gives both historical context and reference to literary figures which were important for the development of Duchamp's method and formed an integral part of his identity. An understanding of Gustave Flaubert, Jean de la Fontaine, Francois Villon, Alfred Jarry and others is essential to any interpretation of Marcel Duchamp
