Abstract
The magnetic properties of nanocrystalline mixtures of martensite and austenite in 304 stainless steel prepared by mechanical milling have been studied. Enhancements of the coercive force and remanence were observed at temperatures below 50 K in milled samples containing martensite as the minor phase. This behaviour has been attributed to exchange coupling between the martensite and austenite phases at temperatures below the Neel temperature. Small displacements of the hysteresis loops of samples cooled under magnetic fields were also observed.
