Abstract

This thesis presents the first detailed analysis of marine and coastal governance in Guatemala. Conservation efforts and management strategies have long focused almost exclusively on terrestrial ecosystems and environmentalist argue
that Guatemala has lived with its back to the sea. Current effort to expand the marine protected area estate frame the central questions: does Guatemala have the necessary governance systems in place to effectively manage existing and proposed marine protected areas? Following a qualitative approach, findings highlight a series of significant changes that need to be implemented in the current governance system to effectively manage marine protected areas in Guatemala.
