N2 - Living Lab Garden 3 “Urban Biodiversity is Design” was established in October 2022 in Crawley Campus UWA (29 Cook Street, Crawley, Perth). The concept of Living Labs (‘living laboratories”) is a progressive experimental way of including research within landscape design framework. The garden concept is based on the demonstration of the dynamic character of existing urban landscapes. The garden shows the dramatic transformation of Perth’s landscapes from the original indigenous vegetation, Karrakatta complex, to a designed colonial garden, an orchard, and a spontaneous weedy space. This journey is taken through a series of looped paths that start and finish with the native garden – an attempt to return native nature, the bushland, to the urban landscape. This Living Lab allows students, staff, and visitors to experience the ongoing research at the UWA School of Design and other UWA Schools (e.g. Shades of urban greening: understanding the social, design and environmental impacts of plant foliage colour in hot cities; Lawn as a cultural and ecological phenomenon in Perth; Garden of the Outcasts (weedy spontaneous plants); Bee Hotels as a port of exploration of bee-friendly botanic garden design in WA; monitoring of the plant development over time). Please explore our Living Lab and get inspiration for your garden. We thank our design team (M. Ignatieva, D. Wittwer, C. Nicholson, Y. Yang and K. Stewart), our sponsors (UWA Campus management team: T. Humphreys, R. Cameron, I. Harse, J. Coopes, G. Tan; School of Design (K. Hislop); HIND’S; Benara, Plantrite, Workpower and APACE nurseries; Syrinx Environmental; UWA LAWN collaboration project; West Coast Turf and Turfcare WA; L. Liu (graphic design) and our enthusiastic master and Ph.D. students for helping in the installation and planting process.
