    Abstract

    © 2015 IEEE. This article presents a novel algorithm for the reliable detection of road edges via multi-layer LIDAR sensing on a moving vehicle for improved safety. Results are presented showing the operation and performance of the system in several outdoor scenarios. The algorithm is then integrated with orientation and position measurements, giving improved reliability and extension to mapping.
