Abstract
This thesis reports an extensive study of Cone Penetration Tests (CPT) in multilayered soils, including clay and sand layers. CPT is the most commonly used tool in geotechnical site investigations to provide soil parameters for foundation designs. This thesis has filled the knowledge gap in interpreting CPT results in thin soil layers. The state-of-the-art Large Deformation Finite Element method is deployed in all the analyses. Based on the results, the undrained shear strengths of clays and relative densities of sands in thin layers can be estimated accurately, to ensure safer and more economical foundation designs.
