Abstract
The contributions to this collective work present and analyze different types of visual signs that are likely to account for the nature of the sounds to which they refer, whether figurative, mathematical, graphic, calligraphic, epigraphic, chromatic, ornamental or compositional.
Using a wide variety of visual aids catalogued in the MUSICONIS database, produced with the support of the ANR and housed at the Musicology Research Institute, such as illuminations, stained glass, sculptures, engravings or tapestries on a long period ranging from classical antiquity to the Renaissance, the types of sound emission are examined, from the proclamation of speech, through music to what is considered noise according to cultural contexts.
