Italian clubs and migrant identity: A cross-generational perspective

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

This article addresses the need to consider Italian migrant identity
through the perspective of multi-generational families involved in an Italian cultural club. This is important, particularly at a time when the Italian population is waning, yet some Italian clubs experience a cultural revival. This research draws on the lived experiences of migrants engaged with an Italian club in Australia (henceforth the Club or Laguna), examining how three-generational Italian families foster a cultural space to create meaningful connections to Italy, and how their engagement with the club contributes to their Italian identity. This paper has implications for the ways in which organisations perpetuate identity across generations. It is also a testimony to the Club’s visionary efforts to maintain Italian tradition, whilst evolving to be inclusive for all, regardless of generational age, ethnicity, or capability.
