    Abstract

[Truncated abstract] This thesis presents the results on the experimental measurement of hydrodynamic forces on a circular cylinder undergoing prescribed harmonic motions in a steady uniform flow. The objective of the study is to quantify the hydrodynamic coefficients in both transverse and in-line directions under different combinations of frequency and amplitude of oscillation. A forced oscillation experimental rig has been developed utilizing the scotch yoke mechanism to cover the range of desired amplitudes and frequencies of the harmonic oscillations. The rig was mounted onto the towing carriage facilities of 40m long and towed at a constant speed. All experiments were performed at Reynolds number of 12000 with aspect ratio of 10...
