Abstract
A geometric possibility of arranging C-60 molecules (buckyballs) in a monolayer in which they are interlocked topologically is considered. Three arrangements of this type, all different from the common, face centred cubic fullerene structure, are presented. Although in this analysis the buckyballs are treated in a simplified way, as rigid bodies, the realization of structures in which C-60 molecules would be arranged in the way described may lead to mechanically stronger fullerene monolayers. The Letter aims to initiate discussion of the viability and the potential of the new systems of interlocked buckyballs. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
