Abstract

This paper utilises the institution theory to address the question of what it means to be foreign and how does this generate liabilities and advantages for MNEs. While there has been an enormous amount of literature on the liability of foreignness, there has been little research discussing the advantage of foreignness. Applying an institutional lens, this paper aims to theorise and examine an institution
advantage in order to provide a more dedicated appreciation of the experience of MNEs in the Chinese machinery industry.
