    Abstract

Recent research studies have shown an increasing interest in the turbulent bursting events corresponding to sediment entrainment and resuspension in an estuarine system. Several investigations have been carried out on the entrainment threshold of sediment. But there remains an inadequate attention to many cases. In particular, the exact interaction between the particles and the fluid, in the level of particle micromechanics in association with the probabilistic feature of turbulent eddies, has not been completely revealed. This paper is a field study on turbulence driven transport of sediments along the lower Swan Estuary of Western Australia. High frequency data have been collected with an Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter (ADV) and an Optical Backscatter Sensor (OBS) in the lower Swan Estuary during ebb tide conditions in ~1.1 m water depth. The collected field data has been post processed using Reynolds decomposition and the quadrant analysis method to understand the role of turbulent coherent structure on resuspension and transport of sediment. Moreover, this analysis improves the knowledge regarding the generation mechanism of ‘bursting phenomenon’ as well as the importance of turbulent bursting events in association with acceleration and deceleration in tidal currents.
