Abstract
TODAY, IN hundreds of wards, homes and similar care settings, nurses will be going beyond mechanical ‘care pathways’ and technical skills-based interventions to make a difference to patients’ lives: to care. Almost unnoticed, they will perform apparently simple acts that greatly affect countless people. Unnoticed, that is, except by patients, who readily acknowledge the difference the care they receive from ‘their’ nurse makes.
