Abstract

The very deepest parts of the world’s oceans are seldom explored. Four of our five oceans extend to depths exceeding 6,000 m, putting them beyond the reach of most commercially available technologies and certainly beyond all human-occupied vehicles currently in operation. In addition to the production of new charts, scientists will have an opportunity to collect samples and conduct research in these remote points, in some cases for the first time ever.
