Abstract

The word νάδιον is found as a term for an aulos instrument in a Byzantine list of names for musical instruments. Its meaning has been subject to debate, and no convincing explanation has emerged. There is some evidence that Greek derived a few musical terms from Indian languages, and one plausible solution is to see νάδιον as a loanword from Sanskrit nādī, which is also the name of a musical pipe.
