Abstract

Bauxite residue is a highly alkaline and saline tailings material which poses numerous environmental challenges associated with its storage. This thesis investigated novel bioremediation treatments for in situ remediation of bauxite residue at field scale, in combination with commonly used amendments. The use of bioremediated residue as a plant germination and growth medium was also investigated. Trace element geochemistry was explored in detail using synchrotron based analytical techniques. Additionally, the dissolution behaviour of key alkalinity generating minerals in bauxite residue was investigated under conditions relevant to remediation. This project has contributed to improving environmental management practices within the alumina industry.
