Abstract

This thesis investigates family histories of imperial opportunity sought in Swan River Colony through dual lenses of British slavery and a globalised Indian Ocean world. Employing the biographies of three British families - Prinsep, Mangles, Stirling – having connections to the East India Company and histories of slavery investment, it reconsiders their contributions to trade, commerce and labour in Western Australia between 1829 and 1850. These intersecting collectives were part of immense changes in empire during the nineteenth century in which commercial focus shifted from plantations and mercantilism of the Atlantic to new settler colonies and free trade of the Indian Ocean.
