Abstract
This thesis explores the solo piano works of pianist-composer Roger Smalley AM (1943-2015), focussing on five significant compositions: Transformation (1968-69, rev.1971); Monody (1971-72); Concerto for Piano and Orchestra (1984-85); 3 Studies in Black and White (2002-04); and Morceau de Concours (2008). The production of a critical edition of Transformation and a two-piano arrangement of Concerto for Piano and Orchestra are discussed. Analyses of Smalley's sketches and recorded performances of these works are detailed to illustrate the integration of piano technique into compositional process, and to resolve questions of musical interpretation for the performer.
