Abstract

Théodore Leschenault travelled to Australia with the Baudin expedition in the years 1800 to 1803 - his recently recovered original manuscript journal contains chapters new to historians, including sections on his travels from Paris to Le Havre and on to Tenerife and Mauritius. There he explores issues around slavery and the treatment of Indigenous peoples (along with a range of other topics), providing context for his later descriptions of Australia and its First Nations peoples.
