Abstract
La Seyne (burnouts and stolen Maserati Quatroporte), 2022, graphite monotype on paper, 56 x 76 cm (each) x 6 panels.
Exhibiting finalist artwork in the biannual 2023 Fremantle Print Award, at Fremantle Arts Centre, Western Australia.
Inscribed in the bitumen of an outer suburban carpark, tyre imprints from automotive skids and the burnt remains of a stolen $280,000 Maserati Quattroporte have been recorded using frottage, automatic drawing and intuitive edits in graphite and eraser on tracing paper. The resulting plates are passed through an etching press to develop indexical diptych monotypes referencing criminal mugshots. Located amongst high-end real estate on La Seyne Crescent in Warnbro the carpark is scheduled for demolition after resident complaints of hooning and anti-social behaviour. The transcription of found forms and marks into a gallery context positions the automotive burnout as an egalitarian form of outer suburban drawing and the burnout performance and destruction of luxury property as acts of resistance to encroaching gentrification in working-class coastal suburbs.
