Abstract
First responders experience mental health conditions at twice the rate of the general population. They remain reluctant to seek help due to workplace stigma and career concerns. The aim of this study was to explore more deeply the barriers to help-seeking in this population in order to identify patterns or characteristics associated with these barriers, with a view to identifying possible solutions. The thesis comprises one qualitative and three quantitative studies which identified two findings which are unique in the literature, one related to how barriers are reported and the other to a new type of treatment model.
