Abstract

This research is a critical investigation of the relationship between feminism and postfeminism within the subgenre of
"postfeminist historical women's films." I consider how five specific strands and concepts of feminist thought have been
deployed or silenced within a comprehensive range of postfeminist historical women's films; these strands are liberal feminism, theorisations of the politics of speech, socialist feminism, the sameness/difference debate as manifested in feminist approaches to the female body, and care theory. This research determines that postfeminist historical women's films both support and
intervene in postfeminist logic, through their deployment of feminist modes of thought.
