Abstract

This Thesis presents an extensive study of tropical marine carbonates of Cenozoic age from SE Asia. The principal aim of the work is to test to what extent geochemical signatures in shallow carbonate platform successions preserve records of local and global environmental factors such as thermogenic or meteoric impacts and major paleoceanographic or paleoclimatic events, and whether such influencing factors may be distinguished. This study provides insight into climate or environmental proxies in low-latitude carbonate platforms formed during a period of global climate change using a combined field, petrographic, stratigraphic and geochemical approach that is likely to have applications elsewhere.
