Abstract

This paper examines the nature and impact of texts about Jewish history and culture in the Piemontese province of Alessandria written since the 1990s, and their role in the often-contested field of Holocaust remembrance, both local and national. Written largely by non-Jewish authors and focusing on communities almost or completely extinguished by wartime deportations, these texts raise questions about how these communities are being represented and understood; at the same time, they offer insight into how dominant narratives about the Holocaust including the myth of the ‘good Italian’ constructed in the post-war period, and the claimed absence of historic anti-Semitism in Italy may be challenged at a local level.
