Abstract

Health literacy is a key determinant of health, according to the World Health Organisation. Health literacy education enables health and social care professions students to identify and provide vital support tailored to consumers' individual health literacy strengths, challenges and preferences. Co-designed tertiary health literacy education can equip students with necessary knowledge and skills upon graduation and ensure local relevance, leading to impactful education that produces health literacy-responsive health and social care professionals. This thesis aimed to explore health literacy within health and social care professions education, including development, barriers and enablers, knowledge and language, using a multi-stakeholder approach.
