Abstract
Sloshing under the first mode in a two-dimensional tank is investigated experimentally to examine the dependence of the critical filing level on tank excitation amplitude. It is found that with the increase of the excitation amplitude, the critical filling level decreases monotonically. The asymmetric sloshing waves generated by exciting the tank at the third mode natural frequency with the horizontal, vertical and a combination of horizontal and vertical excitations are also investigated. The phenomena of wave tripling breaking are observed and analysed in detail. The pressure variation during the wave tripling breaking is also explored.
