Abstract

This study assessed the impact of variability in peri-operative management of WA General surgeons, for patients undergoing surgical repair of gastric and duodenal ulcer perforation from January 2010 to December 2017 on patient outcomes. There was a variable practice among General surgeons surveyed Australia-wide. There were more perforated gastric than duodenal ulcers, likely related to increasing prescription of NSAIDs, especially in older women. NSAIDs surpassed Helicobacter pylori as the main aetiology of perforated gastroduodenal ulcers in WA. The quality of post-operative preventative measures was poor. Standardisation of care is likely to reduce inconsistencies and improve patient outcomes in the future.
