Abstract

This thesis evaluated and demonstrated the importance of adopting a more holistic approach to the evaluation of alternative strategies for tailings management. This effort focused on the investigation of the lifecycle costs of various tailings management options, and on the assessment of the potential environmental impacts of tailings disposal methods from a life cycle perspective. A methodology for the evaluation of tailings management options is proposed, which is suggested will fill a current gap in the mining industry by providing decision makers with a tool to pursue appropriate, cost-effective and more sustainable tailings management solutions.
