Abstract
This thesis contains three empirical essays on different but related aspects of policies used in the emerging market banking sectors, focusing on Indonesia as a case study. The first paper examines the impacts of a policy that mandates commercial banks to increase loans to micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs). The second essay explores the consequences for microbanks when commercial banks started to compete with them in the microfinance sector. The third essay investigates the role of past-time development in shaping current financial development in Indonesia using historical, descriptive, and quantitative approaches. The study also examines the impacts of financial development on several outcomes.
