Abstract

Clostridioides difficileribotype (RT) 017 ranks among the most successful strains of C. difficile in the world, best known for having a high prevalence of antimicrobial resistance. Despite causing global outbreaks since 1995, little is known about C. difficile RT017, especially its origins and clinical impact. This thesis focuses on C. difficile RT017 in Thailand, in Southeast Asia, a region from where the strain likely originated. It explores how C. difficile RT017 spread to other parts of the world, and identifies factors behind the spread. Finally, the clinical impact of C. difficile RT017 compared to other common RTs was determined.
