Abstract
This study examines the strategic planning and innovation behaviour of owner-managers from ‘ordinary’ SMEs. A diagnostic assessment tool was used to collect data on management practice and factor analysis of quantitative data and Leximancer analysis of qualitative data employed to examine their responses. The study suggests that proximity effects, both managerial and behavioural, are strongly influential on the owner-managers' decision making. Our results shows that the level of formality in planning increases with size and complexity as does the interest in formal innovation management.
