Abstract

This PhD project aimed to enhance perinatal mental health screening practices for Aboriginal women through the implementation of the Kimberley Mum’s Mood Scale (KMMS). A mixed methods approach using audits, interviews, and yarning to explore the project’s multiple objectives. During the project there was a significant increase in perinatal mental health screening and a shift towards exclusive use of the KMMS within the Kimberley Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services. The KMMS was found to acceptable to Aboriginal women and healthcare providers. This thesis provides a foundation for future work to improve perinatal mental health care within the region.
