Abstract

This PhD study systematically investigated the effect of biochar on both the H2 and CH4 production in two phase anaerobic digestion (TPAD) and preparation of biochar loaded organic fertiliser from the TPAD effluent. Biochar addition improved both H2 and CH4 production rates and yields, depending on the pH, temperature and biochar addition ratio. The biochar loaded fertiliser showed positive effect on seed germination. The mechanisms of biochar effects in TPAD and seed germination were proposed. The current research has contributed new knowledge and useful experimental data to the utilisation of biochar in anaerobic -digestion applications.
