Effect of Sewage Water on the Cauliflower Productivity in Punjab, Pakistan

Abstract

The study was conducted to investigate the impact of sewage water application along with other factors on the cauliflower yield in Punjab by using Cobb-Douglas production type function. Data was collected from 65 cauliflower growers form peri urban areas of Faisalabad district in 2010. Results of the analysis showed that variables land preparation, labour hours, nitrogen, phosphorous and pesticide numbers were found positively affecting the cauliflower yield. While the coefficient of sewage water application was found negative, showing negative impact of sewage water use on the cauliflower yield. The results of the study suggested preventing farmers to use untreated sewage water for vegetable growing by educating them about its negative impact on productivity and related aspects of human life along with easy access to other source of irrigation for vegetable production.
