Many previous work has devoted to apply the vibration-based condition monitoring method for detecting potential faults in power transformers. One of common faults is the winding deformation caused by the huge electromagnetic force induced by short circuit current. This paper reports an experimental investigation into the vibration characteristics of deformed windings. A series of the deformed circular rings are used to simulate the vibration of winding with different degrees of deformation. The deformed rings are then coupled to simulate the real winding structure, which illustrates the effect of different degrees of deformation on the vibration response and orientation of mode shape of the coupled rings. An experimental method is also developed to identify the location of deformation on the rings based on the measured vibration responses. It hopes this experimental work can provide useful understanding on the vibration characteristics of deformed windings.
